Obtaining a YAESU FT-847 for SatBox Development (November 3, 2026)

The Post Office in Ozamiz

Ozamiz has a population of approximately 144,000 (143,620 in the 2024 Census of Population). With government offices, banks, a seaport, and an airport, it is a convenient and comfortable place for me to live.
Population source: Philippine Statistics Authority, 2024 Census of Population, Northern Mindanao.

An FT-847 Arrives from Japan

A YAESU FT-847 sent by my friend Mr. Sugiura, JK1SNS, in Japan arrived on October 28. It took 12 days from shipment on October 16.
I paid PHP 4,000 (approximately JPY 10,000) in Philippine customs taxes when collecting it.
This shipment arrived relatively quickly. In my experience, however, mail from Japan can often take around a month to arrive. Once, an iPad sent by a friend went missing in transit and took two and a half months to reach me.

A Radio Full of Memories, Back in My Shack

This is the FT-847 generously donated by Mr. Sugiura. Thank you very much for supporting my development work.
I previously owned an FT-847, but a direct lightning strike in January 2016 destroyed all the radios I was using at the time. I am delighted to have the opportunity to use this model again.

Adding FT-847 Support to SatBox

I immediately started modifying the SatBox software to support the FT-847. After two days of work, Doppler control using CAT commands was working well.
I plan to add support for the ICOM IC-9700 next. Buying one for development is beyond my budget, so I would be very grateful to anyone who could help test the software with an actual radio.

How the FT-847 Brought Peter and Me Together

In 2002, Peter, DH1NGP, in Germany was developing a program called FT-847 SuperControl. I happened to find and install it, but it did not work properly in my setup. That was how our correspondence began.
I asked him to support the Japanese version of Windows, and he made improvements. In December 2002, I visited his home, where we worked together on the finishing touches to the software. He kindly hosted me for ten days, and I even had the chance to experience Christmas in Germany.
Peter and I remain friends today. The FT-847 is a particularly memorable radio for me because it brought us together.

Demonstrating Remote Operation at HAM RADIO 2003

In June 2003, I visited Peter again and attended HAM RADIO 2003 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, to help exhibit and sell his FT-847 SuperControl software.
WiMo kindly let us use part of its booth, where I demonstrated a remote-controlled station using FT-847 SuperControl. From the exhibition, I connected over the Internet to the FT-847 at my home in Japan and operated on the 7 MHz band.
Remote operation is widely used today, but it was still unusual in 2003. The demonstration attracted considerable interest from visitors.

Now I am working with the FT-847 again, this time developing SatBox for satellite operation. It looks as though my connection with this radio will continue for some time to come.
