FTDX3000 LCD ready for repair (2025/04/23)
The LCD of my YAESU FTDX3000 is cloudy!
LCD removed from the same FTDX3000 that was damaged by lightning has the same symptoms.
2024/04/04But as I mentioned, YAESU "does not sell in parts and must be sent back to Japan for repair".
The shipping cost alone is 10,700 pesos (about 28,000 yen) one way. And that too cannot be sent directly from the Philippines.
They asked me to send it to their family before sending it back to them.

I had no choice but to contact YAESU in the U.S. The price of the LCD as a part was 40,000 yen.

They eventually gave up on repairing it.
Then about a year

Facebook.KOA GikenCombatant of the "Society for Advanced Amateur Radio Technology
JG2TST Matsui posted that he repaired the LCD on his IC-706
I asked if they replaced the LCD panel, but they said they just replaced the sheet due to degradation of the polarizing sheet.
My LCD was also diagnosed as "the polarizing sheet is probably deteriorating due to high temperature and humidity.
It was also my opinion that it was unlikely that the LCD would be ruined with the same symptoms on both units.
I immediately disassembled the FTDX3000 donor, the one damaged by lightning, and removed the LCD panel.
I was instructed by JG2TST to remove the metal from the frame as well, so I fearfully pried it off with a screwdriver.
Meet the LCD panel
Polarizing sheet will not come off even if pried with fingernails or a flat-blade precision screwdriver
Instructions to try peeling with the teeth of a razor blade or a cutter blade
I plugged it in a bit and the sheet floated away.
All that remains is to peel off the sheet while inserting the cutter blade.
I was able to peel it off by hand halfway through.
I was able to peel it all off, but apparently all the glue is still there.
I ordered polarized sheets from my usual Philippine mail order Shopee for 143 pesos (about $380)
This is a scrubber to remove glue
49 pesos (about 130 yen)
I cannot get anhydrous alcohol in Osamis. Likewise, Shopee doesn't sell it either!
When I consulted with JG2TST, they advised me to search the IPA.

I did that and got a hit on 99.9% pure isopyral alcohol, 155 pesos for 1 liter (about $410).
Total of 3 items including shipping is 687 pesos (about 1,820 yen)
Polarizing films are shipped from China and arrive at Ozamiz in 5 days to 1 week
Work is suspended for the moment.
